Accession 66 - South Carolina Clergy Consultation Service for Problem Pregnancy Records
The South Carolina Clergy Consultation Service For Problem Pregnancy was organized in 1970 by Jack Crandall and Alan Elmore as "a statewide organization of ministers who feel that it is our moral, pastoral, and religious obligation to provide compassion and help to women who are confronted with problem pregnancies." The organization was affiliated with the National Clergy Consultation Service founded by Rev. Howard Moody and Arlene Carmen.

The South Carolina Clergy Consultation Service For Problem Pregnancy Records consist of correspondence, financial records, case study questionnaires and reference materials, documenting the efforts of the Pro-Choice organization (SCCCS) to provide counseling service for women seeking abortions. The SCCCS opened its services in 1970. Correspondents include Rev. Howard Moody, National Clergy Consultation Service Coordinator; South Carolina Senators Ernest F. Hollings, and Strom Thurmond; and South Carolina Congressman James R. Mann.

Accession 67 - Abortion Interest of South Carolina Records
The Abortion Interest Movement of South Carolina was organized in March, 1969 and developed as an extension of the People for Abortion Reform/Repeal. Its purpose is “to educate the citizens of South Carolina about the need for modern abortion legislation.”

The Abortion Interest Movement of South Carolina Records consist of correspondence, speeches, brochures, pamphlets, studies, newspaper clippings, and other records concerning abortion reform not only in South Carolina but in other states. The collection offers a good source of information on the movement to repeal abortion laws not only in South Carolina but also in other parts of the United States and in Europe. The Abortion Interest Movement (AIM) was organized in March, 1969 and developed as an extension of the People for Abortion Reform/Repeal. Its purpose is “to educate the citizens of South Carolina about the need for modern abortion legislation.”

Accession 40 M15(25) - Fellowship of the Concerned Reports
The Fellowship of the Concerned was an organization founded in 1949 and dissolved in 1970. It was an organization of southern women affiliated with the Southern Regional Council and concerned with promoting civil rights. The Fellowship of the Concerned Reports are photocopies from the Southern Regional Council papers of the Dorothy Tilly manuscripts at Emory University and were donated by Dr. Arnold Shankman on November 7, 1975.

Accession 47 - Rock Hill Council on Human Relations
The Rock Hill Council on Human Relations was organized in 1954 by the Rock Hill City Council to further promote diversity and communication with the city’s African-American population. In 2014, the committee was merged with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee and No Room For Racism Committee to form the City of Rock Hill Community Relations Council.

Accession 98 - Arnold Shankman Papers
Dr. Arnold Shankman (1945-1983) was a highly regarded historian whose scholarship included the American Civil War, the Old South, ethnic and immigrant history, southern Jewish history, civil rights, and women’s history. Dr. Shankman received his B.A. from Knox College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned Civil War historian Bell Wiley. Shankman also studied for a year at Harvard with Oscar Handlin, the patriarch of American immigrant history. As a Professor of History at Winthrop University from 1975 to 1983, Dr. Shankman embarked upon his own impressive career, which included the publication of four books, more than 50 articles, and numerous speeches and public service activities. Beloved by students and colleagues, Dr. Shankman’s career was cut short by his untimely death from cancer at the age of 37.

Accession 155 - Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers
Juanita Willmon Goggins (1934-2010) was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, House District number 49, representing York County for six years. Born in Pendleton, SC in 1934 she would also become the first African-American woman to serve on the United States Civil Rights Commission as well as the first African-American woman to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Goggins was responsible for creating sickle cell anemia testing in all of the county health departments in South Carolina among other accomplishments. Ms. Goggins passed away in 2010.

Accession 179 M180 (221) - National Council of Negro Women, Inc. - Columbia Section Records
National Council of Negro Women was founded by Mary McLeod Bethune in 1935. Bethune envisioned NCNW functioning as a clearinghouse, facilitating networking and coalition building, and advocating the use of collective power on issues affecting women, their families and communities.

Marguerite Tolbert was a Winthrop alumna (class of 1914), club woman, educator and administrator with the Opportunity School in Columbia, South Carolina. She also served on the Winthrop Board of Trustees 1949-1959.

The York County Multiethnic Heritage Project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the City of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July, 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and American Indian.

Accession 218 - Newspaper Collection
The Newspaper Collection consists of newspapers and portions of newspapers mostly from the United States with a focus on South Carolina Newspapers. These newspapers are rare or contain subjects of note and are placed in the oversize flat files. The following inventory contains the title of the newspaper in alphabetical order, the location they were printed, important subjects and/or notes, and the date they were published. This collection is continuously added to as they are received from various donors. These newspapers are added to this collection if they are not a part of a larger collection.

Accession 241 - Johnette Green Edwards Papers
Johnette Green Edwards (1926-1977) was a social worker, club woman, and first African-American member of the Winthrop College Board of Visitors. A few of her distinctions are: she served as Executive director of the Trident forum for the Handicapped; the Johnette Edwards Scholarship was established at the College of Charleston; she served as President of the S.C. Federations of Women’s Clubs; she served as President of Girl’ Clubs, Inc.; she was also an Executive Council member of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs.v

Mrs. Marguerite Dawson King (1901-1979) was a very active and civic minded woman and made many valuable contributions to the advancement of women and senior citizens.

Accession 246 - Vernon Grant Papers
Vernon Simeon Plemion Grant (1902-1990) was an American illustrator known for his whimsical gnome characters and fairy tale drawings. He created advertising illustrations for several large companies and major magazines, but is best known for the Snap!™, Crackle!™ and Pop!™ characters for Kellogg’s Rice Krispies® cereal. Mr. Grant married Elizabeth Fewell who was a native Rock Hillian and they eventually moved to Rock Hill, SC. Mr. Grant served several years on the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce and helped to found the award-winning Come-See-Me Festival in Rock Hill, SC.

Accession 88 - Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce Recrods
The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was created to promote Rock Hill, SC in an effort to attract new residents and businesses to the area with the intention of “making it a better community.” The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was an organization formed by local businessman that can trace its history to 1888 when Captain W. L. Roddey founded the Rock Hill Board of Trade. By 1901 they began to refer to themselves as the Commercial Club and continued to be known as the Commercial Club until it was reorganized as the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce in 1906 under the direction of John Gary Anderson.
The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce Records consist of correspondence, lists, brochures, pamphlets, program notes, magazine issues, newsletters, committee reports, financial data, and other records relating to the history and activities of the Chamber of Commerce. The collection contains records regarding sponsorship of Rock Hill’s “Come-See-Me” event and records of former Chamber Managers’ Vernon Grant and Clint Carpenter. Also contained are papers regarding Chamber accreditation, co-educational support for Winthrop University, area-wide racial integration, and recognition of Rock Hill as an All-American City.

Accession 91 M40 (53) - Springs Cotton Mill History
The Springs Cotton Mill traces it's beginning to the organization of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Co. which opened a plant in Fort Mill, SC in 1888. The company went on to open plants in Lancaster, SC and Chester, SC. At one time Springs was the largest industrial employer in South Carolina. Springs began an association with a Brazil based company (Coteminas) in 2001 and merged with Coteminas in 2005 forming Springs Global. By 2007, Springs had ended all manufacturing in South Carolina.

The Springs Cotton Mill History collection consists of a history of the Springs Cotton Mill based in Fort Mill, SC including a narrative and description of the company’s first 75 years of history from 1888 to 1963, which includes photographs and illustrations. Also included is a copy of the annual message to stockholders (a report of the 1962 calendar year) titled "Freedom to Fight with Both Hands" by H. W. Close, president.

Accession 147 - Thomas Family Papers
Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas (1879-1962) was a professor of Chemistry and Physics at Winthrop from 1914 through 1926. He brought his family with him to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop and quickly became one of the prominent families in Rock Hill, SC. The Thomas Family founded Thomas Tours, Inc. which was a Rock Hill travel agency founded in the 1920s and existed until 2010 when it was merged with Mann Travels.

Accession 158 - John Gary Anderson Papers
John Gary Anderson (1861-1937) founded the Rock Hill Buggy Company and was the president of the Anderson Motor Company in Rock Hill, SC. He was also one of the key figures in the early development of Rock Hill. He helped in the founding of the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce serving as it's first president, is credited with creating the Rock Hill Telephone Company and helping come up with the "Rock Hill Plan" for the reduction of the production of cotton. Mr. Anderson was a member of the Winthrop Board of Trustees from 1920 to 1937.

The Freidheim Family was a prominent Rock Hill, SC family from the mid 19th century through the late 20th century and were the owners of Freidheim’s Department Store in downtown Rock Hill. (Also spelled Friedheim).

Accession 207 M91 (177) - Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company Records
The Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company, known locally as "The Bleachery" was one the nations largest textile finishing plants at it's height. The Rock Hill plant bleached, dyed, printed and finished cloth and employed nearly 5,000 workers at its height in 1965. The plant site was placed on the National Register of Historic places in 2013.

Accession 220 - Rock Hill Hardware Company Records
The Rock Hill Hardware Company was organized on June 4, 1893 by A.R. Smith and John Gelzer, A.A. Barron and his sons R.E. and W.L. bought Smith out in 1896 and by 1907 had acquired the whole firm. The Barron family owned and operated it until it closed in 1978.

Accession 175 - Daniel Saye Hollis Papers
Daniel Saye Hollis (1885-1981) was a politician and community leader from Rock Hill, SC. He was born in Lewisville, SC and was the supervisor of Lewsiville Township in 1907. He also helped found the York County Farm Bureau and served as it's first president. Mr. Hollis served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1950 to 1952.

Accession 221 - Hardin-Wilkes Family Papers
The Hardin-Wilkes Family are longtime residents of Chester, SC. Captain Obadiah Hardin (1827-1862) was a Confederate officer in Co. E, 6th SC Volunteers, Chester Guards, during the American Civil War, stationed at various encampments around Manassas, Virginia, in 1861. Capt. Hardin died from wounds sustained at the Battle of Dranesville on January 1, 1862.

Accession 31 - Episcopal Church Home for Children Records
The Episcopal Church Home was established in 1850 in Charleston, S.C. for orphan girls and was chartered by the S.C. General Assembly in 1852.

This collection is a valuable source on the Church’s historical effort to extend its services for the social improvement of South Carolina (in this case the Episcopal Diocese’s program for destitute children.) While there is information on the Episcopal Home for Children from its beginning in 1850 to 1967, the actual records do not start until 1866. A centennial history of the Episcopal Home will serve as an aid and general guideline to the researcher. (See box 1, folder 1). The collection consists of minutes, reports of the annual meeting, general correspondence, superintendent’s records, health records, attendance registers, financial records, newsletters (both bound and unbound), and photographs. Accession 160 - Juvenile Music Club of Rock Hill Scrapbook
The Juvenile Music Club of Rock Hill was organized in 1934 under the sponsorship of the Rock Hill Music Club. Miss Georgia Dickert was the adult leader (Councilor) of the group. Children from age nine through junior high school age were eligible for membership.

Accession 297 - Carolyn Essig Frederick Papers
Carolyn Essig Frederick (ca1906-2000) was a civic leader and member of the South Carolina House of Representatives for Greenville County from 1967-1976. Ms. Frederick was the first Republican woman to be elected to the House and played an important role in the passage of the Freedom of Information Act. She also authored legislation establishing Foster Care Review Boards, the Tuition Grants Program, and the South Carolina Commission on Women.

Accession 1 - Mary Elizabeth Frayser Papers
Mary Elizabeth Frayser was an educator, home economist, social worker and club woman. She was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1868. She received her B.S. degree from Columbia University in 1911. After serving as Head of the Home Economics Department at Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia 1911-1912, she became the State Agent for Rural and Mill Village Community Extension Work at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1912. Frayser subsequently held positions with Georgia Federal Children's Bureau, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Virginia Tuberculosis Association, She returned to Winthrop in 1922 resuming her mill village work as well as teaching Sociology. In 1926 Frayser began research projects in Home Economics through a co-operative program between Winthrop and Clemson, a position she held for the next 20 years. Miss Frayser was a member of and participated in numerous organizations concerning social issues in South Carolina. She died just short of her 100th birthday in 1968.

Accession 93 - Rock Hill Lions Club Records
The Rock Hill Lions Club was chartered April 29, 1929 as a community service organization dedicated to improving the lives of Rock Hill residents.

The Rock Hill Lions Club Records consist of minutes, reports, correspondence, financial records, program notes, newspaper clippings, bylaws, supply catalogs, magazines, annual directories, newsletters, bulletins, membership records, ballots, activity reports, memorabilia, and a poster. Most of the material consists of records relating to various fund raising activities sponsored by the Rock Hill Lions Club to obtain money for charities. About one-third of the collection consists of financial records. It is a good source of information, not only for those doing research on the Lions Club but for those researching work done with the blind, the poor, the Boys Home of the South in Greenville, SC, the Episcopal Church Home in York, SC, and the SC Eye Bank. The club functions as a community service organization.

Accession 94 - Rock Hill Junior Women's Club Records
The Junior Woman’s Club of Rock Hill (JWC) has served the Rock Hill community since 1955 as a “not for profit” philanthropic volunteer organization. During its fifty plus years of service, JWC has accomplished many things such as assisting in the beginning of the Adult Education program and the Girls’ Home of Rock Hill. The JWC is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of South Carolina.

The Junior Woman's Club of Rock Hill Records contain a historical file, minutes, correspondence, membership lists, financial records, project reports, newsletters, yearbook and thirty-seven scrapbooks relating to the growth, activities and community contributions of the Rock Hill Junior Woman’s Club from 1955 to 2003.

Accession 96 - Rock Hill Jaycee-ettes Records
The Rock Hill Jaycee-ettes was organized in 1953 as a non-profit women's organization that offered leadership training through community service in the Rock Hill area. The Rock Hill Jaycee-ettes became affiliated with the South Carolina Jaycee-ettes in 1967. The club’s purpose was to promote and support the activities of the all-male Rock Hill Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce). The Jaycee-ettes ceased to exist in 1985 when the Jaycees allowed women to become members.

Accession 165 - South Carolina Jaycee-ettes Records
The South Carolina Jaycee-ettes were organized in 1955 as an all-female auxiliary to the all-male South Carolina Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) and had as their primary purpose to be of assistance to the Jaycees; to be of benefit to the community; and to have fellowship with all Jaycee wives. In the mid-1980s the Jaycees begin to allow women to be members thus the Jaycee-ettes were no longer a necessary organization.

Accession 205 - Pilot International South Carolina District Records
The Pilot Club International was a service oriented club for women, however men can now be part of the club. The South Carolina District was founded in the 1930s for “the promotion of social welfare through the performance of civil and beneficial service of the character generally accomplished by civic organizations, rendering aid and assistance to local Pilot Clubs and implementing at the district level the programs and policies of Pilot Club International.”

The Rock Hill Rotary Club was chartered by the International Association of Rotary Clubs on February 1, 1919 as a service organization.

The Kiwanis Club of Rock Hill was chartered in 1920 as a service club with a direct mission of service to the youth of the Rock Hill and York County, SC community.

Accession 244 M107 (137) - Rock Hill Civitan Club Records
The Rock Hill Civitan Club was granted its charter on April 15, 1955 by Civitan International. The Civitans aim is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on the youth and helping people with developmental disabilities.

The Fellowship of the Concerned Reports consist of two reports presented before the Fellowship in Atlanta, with one report by Marion Allan Wright describing the civil rights situation in South Carolina and the other by Father Maurice Shean of the Oratory in Rock Hill describing the work of the Rock Hill Council on Human Relations to better race relations in the city. The Fellowship was founded in 1949 and dissolved in 1970. It was an organization of southern women affiliated with the Southern Regional Council and concerned with promoting civil rights.

The collection includes material relating to the South Carolina Council on Human Relations with which the Rock Hill Council was affiliated, American Friends Services committee, Southern Regional Council, and a black & white 16mm film pertaining to the origin and early development of the Council. Correspondents include Alice Spearman Wright, civil rights activist and former executive secretary of the South Carolina Council on Human Relations.

Accession 48 - Marion Allan Wright Papers
Marion Allan Wright [1894-1983] of South Carolina was an attorney, author, member of the board of directors of the American Civil Liberties Union, and civil rights supporter.

The Marion Allan Wright Papers consist mainly of speeches relating to civil rights, civil liberties, the role of libraries in society, and capital punishment, but also included are autobiographical writings, articles, correspondence, and biographical data concerning the civil rights movement.

Accession 119 M50 (65) - Rock Hill Oratory Photographs
The Rock Hill Oratory is affiliated with the Catholic Church and was founded in 1934 as part of a worldwide federation of 60 independent houses. The Oratory was early supporter of Civil Rights and the local sit-ins in Rock Hill, SC during the 1960s. The Oratory was also affiliated with the St. Anne Catholic School which became the first racially integrated school in South Carolina.

Accession 169 - Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina Records
The Upper South Carolina Branch of the Women’s Auxiliary was formed at the same time as the Upper Diocese of South Carolina in October, 1922. In 1958 the name was changed to the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina. It functions as a Christian humanitarian organization in support of the Church and the betterment of society.

Marion Allan Wright (1894-1983) of South Carolina was an attorney, author, member of the board of directors of the American Civil Liberties Union, and civil rights supporter.

Julius Waties Waring (1880-1968) was a Charleston attorney, federal district court judge, and civil rights activist. He oversaw several pivotal civil rights cases in South Carolina as a federal district court judge.

Dr. Kathryn Summers Powell (1920-2000) was born in High Springs, FL and married Orrin Bert Powell in 1939. In 1940 she received her B.S. from Florida State College for Women. She worked as a teacher in High Springs and Monticello, FL and later earned her M.S. (1954) and Ph.D. (1960) from Florida State University. Dr. Powell then became Professor of Home Economics at Winthrop College from 1960 through 1976. She passed away on December 11, 2000.

The South Carolina Extension Homemakers Council was organized to promote the study of Home Economics and the work of home economics in the state. The council was originally known as the South Carolina Council of Farm Women which was organized at Winthrop in June, 1921. The name was changed to South Carolina Home Demonstration Council in 1957 and to South Carolina Extension Homemakers Council in 1966. The name was changed again in 1992 when it became the South Carolina Association for Family and Community Education was adopted in 1992, and finally became the South Carolina Family and Community Leaders in 1995.

Accession 48 - Marion Allan Wright Papers
Marion Allan Wright [1894-1983] of South Carolina was an attorney, author, member of the board of directors of the American Civil Liberties Union, and civil rights supporter.

The Marion Allan Wright Papers consist mainly of speeches relating to civil rights, civil liberties, the role of libraries in society, and capital punishment, but also included are autobiographical writings, articles, correspondence, and biographical data concerning the civil rights movement.

Accession 8 - James Pinckney Kinard Papers
James Pinckney Kinard (1864-1951) was the second president of Winthrop College (now University), the South Carolina College for Women and served from 1929-1934. For more information please consult the James Pinckney Kinard Biography above.

The James Pinckney Kinard Papers consist of family history charts of the Kinard family and related Kuhn and Summer families, and a Kinard family history, personal correspondence including letters to and from his wife Lee Wicker Kinard (1873-1963), their daughter Nelle Kinard, and other family members, business correspondence, financial papers, literary manuscripts, scrapbooks, and photographs pertaining to Kinard’s student days at the Citadel, his personal and family affairs, his teaching career, his presidency of Winthrop, and his efforts to get his literary manuscripts published. This collection consists primarily of correspondence and offers an informative insight into the personal lives and family affairs of Dr. Kinard and his wife, Mrs. Lee Wicker Kinard. The correspondence generally deals with Dr. Kinard’s struggle against the South Carolina legislature’s cuts in educational appropriations for Winthrop during the Depression; and his varied activities on behalf of Winthrop as President Emeritus. The collection also includes several unpublished manuscripts ranging from his student days at the Citadel to his later life. Areas of research would perhaps include, among others, biographical information on Dr. Kinard and social history during the Depression.

Mrs. Stackhouse was an educator and civic leader. Mary Frayser includes excerpts and original correspondence of Mrs. Stackhouse in the publication.

Accession 25 - M7 (17) - Leila Russell Papers
Leila Russell (1871-1963) was an 1889 graduate of Winthrop and later was a professor of education and alumni secretary at Winthrop College from 1895 to 1945. Ms. Russell founded the Winthrop campus King's Daughters Circle in 1895 which later became the college's chapter of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). She also organized several Rural School Improvement Associations which later merged into Parent Teacher Associations. She was York County's first county supervisor of education. As such, Ms. Russell helped to inaugurate field day in schools. She led York County rural schools to study consolidation and determine what it could mean to education. Her study and promotion of consolidation in York County led other counties to do likewise. She also centered attention on the need of a public provision for transportation of rural children to school in York County.

Accession 155 - Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers
Juanita Willmon Goggins (1934-2010) was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, House District number 49, representing York County for six years. Born in Pendleton, SC in 1934 she would also become the first African-American woman to serve on the United States Civil Rights Commission as well as the first African-American woman to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Goggins was responsible for creating sickle cell anemia testing in all of the county health departments in South Carolina among other accomplishments. Ms. Goggins passed away in 2010.

The Esther Surasky Pinck Papers consist of correspondence and newspaper clippings, relating to the Pinck, Surasky, and Polier families, together with concert, literary, and drama programs, newsletters, photographs, citations, poems, and memorabilia. The papers contain information on Mrs. Pinck’s years at Winthrop and her extensive work for Jewish causes, such as the United Jewish Appeal, the Jewish National Fund, Technion, Hadassah, and the Hebrew Home for the Aged. There is also a biographical file on Mrs. Pinck’s husband, Dr. Louis A. Pinck, who was a chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Carolyn Essig Frederick (ca1906-2000) was a civic leader and member of the South Carolina House of Representatives for Greenville County from 1967-1976. Ms. Frederick was the first Republican woman to be elected to the House and played an important role in the passage of the Freedom of Information Act. She also authored legislation establishing Foster Care Review Boards, the Tuition Grants Program, and the South Carolina Commission on Women.

Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas (1879-1962) was a professor of Chemistry and Physics at Winthrop from 1914 through 1926. He brought his family with him to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop and quickly became one of the prominent families in Rock Hill, SC. The Thomas Family founded Thomas Tours, Inc. which was a Rock Hill travel agency founded in the 1920s and existed until 2010 when it was merged with Mann Travels.

Includes a copy of the printed version of a diary by Samuel Cosmo Lowry (1845-1864) of the 17th Infantry SCV Co. F, providing a highly literate account of the life of a young Confederate soldier: “We lay in the woods a short distance from the enemy’s line, watching the flying shells as they passed over us, seeing, whistling, literally plowing the air, the loud shriek of the flying shells, the dull whiz of the great ancanisten, with the disappearing cry of wounded mortals, fairly rent the air.”

The Hardin-Wilkes Family are longtime residents of Chester, SC. Captain Obadiah Hardin (1827-1862) was a Confederate officer in Co. E, 6th SC Volunteers, Chester Guards, during the American Civil War, stationed at various encampments around Manassas, Virginia, in 1861. Capt. Hardin died from wounds sustained at the Battle of Dranesville on January 1, 1862.

He was born in Rock Hill, SC and received an A.B. degree from Erskine College in 1933. He was a former Postmaster in Rock Hill and practiced law in the Gettys, McFadden and Wilkerson Law Firm.

Icky Albright was a realtor, insurance executive, and the regional director of the Small Business Administration. He is also credited with being one of the driving influences in the founding of Rock Hill, SC's Come-See-Me Festival.

The Yorkville Enquirer is a newspaper produced in York, SC (formerly known as Yorkville) and is distributed throughout York County, SC as well as in surrounding counties. The newspaper began publishing in January 1855 and is still in existence.

The Yorkville Enquirer collection consists of bound weekly issues of the York County, South Carolina newspaper from 1931, 1933-1935. The newspaper, published in York, S.C., highlights news from York County, surrounding counties, and South Carolina.

The We Come, America: Pageant of Women in Industry program is a program for a pageant presented at the Southern Textile Exposition in Greenville, SC under the auspices of the YWCA on May 7-8, 1919. The pageant was designed to depict "...with song, motion and color, the part Woman has played in the industrial development of the [United States] , both before and since [World War I]."

Accession 6 - Juanita H. Neeley Papers
Juanita Henderson Neely was an extension agent and educator. She was born in Rock Hill, S.C. in 1889. She graduated with a B.A. from Winthrop College in 1911 and taught school from 1911 to 1918. She began working for the SC Extension Service, then based at Winthrop, in 1918 serving Lancaster County. She held various positions in the SC Extension Service in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. She became the State Home Demonstration Agent in 1947, a position she held until 1957. She was a member and president of the SC Home Economics Association, the York County Historical Society, the Catawba Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the S.D. Barron Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). Neely died in 1984.

Accession 10 - Christine South Gee Papers
Christine South Gee (1884-1978) was a graduate of Winthrop Normal and Industrial College of South Carolina in 1903, taught English at Winthrop from 1909-1913, and was a Winthrop Trustee from 1944-1962. She was also a home economist, educator, and club woman. Mrs. Gee was the first recipient of an Honorary Degree from Winthrop in 1966.

The Christine South Gee Papers include family histories; biographical data; annual reports of home demonstration work in South Carolina (1920-1922) compiled by Mrs. Gee; speeches; magazine articles (1935-1963); newspaper clippings (1934-1968); photographs (1903-1954) and certificates of awards. The collection primarily pertains to Mrs. Gee’s work as South Carolina State Home Demonstration Agent (1918-1923); her role in the formation of the South Carolina Extension Homemakers’ Council (1921), formerly the South Carolina Council of Farm Women; her activities as president of the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1943-1945); her study of development in programs for adult education and rural women; and her historical interest in South Carolina statesmen and political leaders. Family histories include information on the Puckett, Smith, Martin, Hudgens, McNeese, Rodgers, and Saxon families.

The South Carolina Home Economics Association (SCHEA) was organized in March 1914. The SCHEA was organized to help improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities through fellowship, education, and service.

This collection is a valuable source on home economics history in South Carolina during the twentieth century. While there is information on the SCHEA from its beginning in 1914 to 1980, the actual records do not start until 1920. An outline of what the South Carolina Home Economics Association was doing from 1914 to 1920, is provided in the “historical file” (see Box 1, folders 1 to 4). The inclusive dates for a particular series may vary and, for most series, the records are incomplete. The collection contains all the records normally created by an organization, including constitutions, correspondence, minutes, reports, handbooks, etc. A wide variety of research topics could be developed from the records, including the SCHEA’s impact on the legislative process in South Carolina (e.g. the passage of the bill for the enrichment of cornmeal and grits in 1943), its cooperation and relationship with relief agencies in the state and its role in improving child health during the 1930s.

Mary Elizabeth Johnston (Pat) Gates (1926-2013) was a former president of the South Carolina Extension Homemakers’ Council and a noted civic leader. Mrs. Gates was born in Sumter, SC and a former member and president of the Sumter County Extension Homemakers' Council. She was also the president of the South Carolina Extension Homemakers' Council in 1974.

Dr. Arnold Shankman (1945-1983) was a highly regarded historian whose scholarship included the American Civil War, the Old South, ethnic and immigrant history, southern Jewish history, civil rights, and women’s history. Dr. Shankman received his B.A. from Knox College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned Civil War historian Bell Wiley. Shankman also studied for a year at Harvard with Oscar Handlin, the patriarch of American immigrant history. As a Professor of History at Winthrop University from 1975 to 1983, Dr. Shankman embarked upon his own impressive career, which included the publication of four books, more than 50 articles, and numerous speeches and public service activities. Beloved by students and colleagues, Dr. Shankman’s career was cut short by his untimely death from cancer at the age of 37.

Accession 186 - York County Multiethnic Heritage Project Collection
The York County Multiethnic Heritage Project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the City of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July, 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and American Indian.

The Marion Allan Wright Papers consist mainly of speeches relating to civil rights, civil liberties, the role of libraries in society, and capital punishment, but also included are autobiographical writings, articles, correspondence, and biographical data concerning the civil rights movement.

In her interview with Cynthia Wilson January 22, 1979, Cynthia Roddey shares her experiences at Winthrop from 1964-1967 as the first African American student admitted to Winthrop College. Roddey details the process of applying to Winthrop, the reaction she received from the Winthrop and Rock Hill community, and her participation in student life. Roddey includes her insight on race relations today and her hopes for the future. This interview was conducted for an article for The Johnsonian, which is the student newspaper for Winthrop University.

The Rock Hill Oratory is affiliated with the Catholic Church and was founded in 1934 as part of a worldwide federation of 60 independent houses. The Oratory was early supporter of Civil Rights and the local sit-ins in Rock Hill, SC during the 1960s. The Oratory was also affiliated with the St. Anne Catholic School which became the first racially integrated school in South Carolina.

Accession 155 - Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers
Juanita Willmon Goggins (1934-2010) was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, House District number 49, representing York County for six years. Born in Pendleton, SC in 1934 she would also become the first African-American woman to serve on the United States Civil Rights Commission as well as the first African-American woman to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Goggins was responsible for creating sickle cell anemia testing in all of the county health departments in South Carolina among other accomplishments. Ms. Goggins passed away in 2010.

The Esther Surasky Pinck Papers consist of correspondence and newspaper clippings, relating to the Pinck, Surasky, and Polier families, together with concert, literary, and drama programs, newsletters, photographs, citations, poems, and memorabilia. The papers contain information on Mrs. Pinck’s years at Winthrop and her extensive work for Jewish causes, such as the United Jewish Appeal, the Jewish National Fund, Technion, Hadassah, and the Hebrew Home for the Aged. There is also a biographical file on Mrs. Pinck’s husband, Dr. Louis A. Pinck, who was a chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Accession 85 M36 (58) - Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church Programs
The Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church is located near Lancaster, SC in Lancaster County and is one of the oldest churches in the Piedmont section of South Carolina. The church can trace it's roots to the 1750s with the first known sermon preached by Rev. John Brown in February 1753. The first "meeting house" was burned during the American Revolution and the subsequent church burned in 1802. The current church was the fourth structure and was built in 1896 with a brick veneer added in the 1940s. The church cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Dr. Frances Lander Spain [1903-1999] was a 1925 graduate of Winthrop with a Bachelor of Arts and later received a B. L. S. from Emory University (1936) and M. A. and Ph. D degrees from the University of Chicago (1940, 1944). Dr. Spain would later serve as the Director of Library and Professor of library science at Winthrop (1936-1949).

The Frances Lander Spain Papers consist of correspondence, clippings, photographs, memorabilia, and copies of her publications relating to her involvement with professional library organizations such as the American Library Association; her library work in Thailand as a Fulbright and Rockefeller Foundation grantee (1951-1952 and 1964-1965); and her work as coordinator of children’s services at the N.Y. Public Library (1953-1961). Correspondents include librarian Louis Round Wilson. There is also a family history which includes the family names Chambers, Collier, Cook, Crossland, Dantzler, Gran, Hardeman, Lander, McDaniel, McPherson, Miller, Pearce, Pierce, Schenk, Snead, Spain, Sparks, Warlick and Zimmerman.

The Yorkville Enquirer is a newspaper produced in York, SC (formerly known as Yorkville) and is distributed throughout York County, SC as well as in surrounding counties. The newspaper began publishing in January 1855 and is still in existence.

Accession 88 - Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce Recrods
The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was created to promote Rock Hill, SC in an effort to attract new residents and businesses to the area with the intention of “making it a better community.” The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was an organization formed by local businessman that can trace its history to 1888 when Captain W. L. Roddey founded the Rock Hill Board of Trade. By 1901 they began to refer to themselves as the Commercial Club and continued to be known as the Commercial Club until it was reorganized as the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce in 1906 under the direction of John Gary Anderson.

The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce Records consist of correspondence, lists, brochures, pamphlets, program notes, magazine issues, newsletters, committee reports, financial data, and other records relating to the history and activities of the Chamber of Commerce. The collection contains records regarding sponsorship of Rock Hill’s “Come-See-Me” event and records of former Chamber Managers’ Vernon Grant and Clint Carpenter. Also contained are papers regarding Chamber accreditation, co-educational support for Winthrop University, area-wide racial integration, and recognition of Rock Hill as an All-America City.

Accession 147 - Thomas Family Papers
Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas (1879-1962) was a professor of Chemistry and Physics at Winthrop from 1914 through 1926. He brought his family with him to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop and quickly became one of the prominent families in Rock Hill, SC. The Thomas Family founded Thomas Tours, Inc. which was a Rock Hill travel agency founded in the 1920s and existed until 2010 when it was merged with Mann Travels.

Accession 158 - John Gary Anderson Papers
John Gary Anderson (1861-1937) founded the Rock Hill Buggy Company and was the president of the Anderson Motor Company in Rock Hill, SC. He was also one of the key figures in the early development of Rock Hill. He helped in the founding of the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce serving as it's first president, is credited with creating the Rock Hill Telephone Company and helping come up with the "Rock Hill Plan" for the reduction of the production of cotton. Mr. Anderson was a member of the Winthrop Board of Trustees from 1920 to 1937.

Dr. William Wallace Fennell (1869-1926) founded the Fennell Infirmary in 1910 and the Infirmary operated until 1935 when the Infirmary was sold to the Sisters of St. Francis. Dr. Fennell was a graduate of South Carolina Medical College in 1895 and settled in Rock Hill, SC in 1897. He is buried in Laurelwood cemetery in Rock Hill, SC.

Accession 297 - Carolyn Essig Frederick Papers
Carolyn Essig Frederick (ca1906-2000) was a civic leader and member of the South Carolina House of Representatives for Greenville County from 1967-1976. Ms. Frederick was the first Republican woman to be elected to the House and played an important role in the passage of the Freedom of Information Act. She also authored legislation establishing Foster Care Review Boards, the Tuition Grants Program, and the South Carolina Commission on Women.

Accession 23 - Horace W. Slocum Journals
Horace Slocum was born in 1900 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, but lived most of his life in Rochester, New Hampshire. Mr. Slocum attended college in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to study textile design. He later moved to Rock Hill, SC where he worked as a government inspector. Horace Slocum passed away on October 2, 1968, at the age of 68.

Leize Fishburne Brown Lockwood was born in on October 22, 1861. She married John Palmer Lockwood on November 15, 1883. Mrs. Lockwood died on April 12, 1934 and is buried at Yeamans Hall Plantation Cemetery, Goose Creek, Berkeley County, South Carolina.

The Rock Hill Music Club was founded March 20, 1914, by Mrs. A. E. Smith and a group of ladies. The Club has provided music awards and scholarships and free community concerts since.

The Rock Hill Music Club Records consist of minutes, correspondence, yearbooks, historical sketches, programs of the meetings, minute books, newspaper clippings, membership records, and two scrapbooks relating to the activities and history of the club. The club was organized in 1914. The records date from 1941 to 1977.

The Juvenile Music Club of Rock Hill was organized in 1934 under the sponsorship of the Rock Hill Music Club. Miss Georgia Dickert was the adult leader (Councilor) of the group. Children from age nine through junior high school age were eligible for membership.

The Henry Radcliffe Sims Papers consist primarily of personal and business correspondence and offers a good source of information on the Sims family's varied interests in South Carolina, especially their businesses in Orangeburg, South Carolina. The correspondence generally deals with Henry Sims' brief military career; his presidency at Winthrop; his efforts along with his brothers' help to establish a radio station at Orangeburg; his constant concern in the Sims Publishing Company; his interest in the political and educational welfare of his nephews; his devotion to his family; and his association with various South Carolina legislators. The Yorkville Enquirer is a newspaper produced in York, SC (formerly known as Yorkville) and is distributed throughout York County, SC as well as in surrounding counties. The newspaper began publishing in January 1855 and is still in existence.

The Yorkville Enquirer collection consists of bound weekly issues of the York County, South Carolina newspaper from 1931, 1933-1935. The newspaper, published in York, S.C., highlights news from York County, surrounding counties, and South Carolina.

Accession 170 - Springs Bulletin
The Springs Cotton Mill traces it's beginning to the organization of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Co. which opened a plant in Fort Mill, SC in 1888. The company went on to open plants in Lancaster, SC and Chester, SC. At one time Springs was the largest industrial employer in South Carolina. Springs began an association with a Brazil based company (Coteminas) in 2001 and merged with Coteminas in 2005 forming Springs Global. By 2007, Springs had ended all manufacturing in South Carolina.

The York County Multiethnic Heritage Project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the City of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July, 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and American Indian.

Accession 196 - Bleachery Beacon
The Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company, known locally as "The Bleachery" was one the nations largest textile finishing plants at it's height. The Rock Hill plant bleached, dyed, printed and finished cloth and employed nearly 5,000 workers at its height in 1965. The plant site was placed on the National Register of Historic places in 2013.

The Newspaper Collection consists of newspapers and portions of newspapers mostly from the United States with a focus on South Carolina Newspapers. These newspapers are rare or contain subjects of note and are placed in the oversize flat files. The following inventory contains the title of the newspaper in alphabetical order, the location they were printed, important subjects and/or notes, and the date they were published. This collection is continuously added to as they are received from various donors. These newspapers are added to this collection if they are not a part of a larger collection.

Accession 206 - John R. Schorb Papers
John R. Schorb (1818-1908) was one of America’s first photographers and operated a studio in York, South Carolina.

Accession 78 - Grace Beacham Freeman Papers
Grace Beacham Freeman (1916-2002) was a writer, poet, and educator and was the South Carolina Poet Laureate from 1985 to 1986. She was married to Winthrop Biology professor John Alderman Freeman.

The Grace Beacham Freeman Papers documents the development of Mrs. Freeman’s career as a writer from 1948 to the 1960s as well as her relationship with various members of her family. The collection is divided into two groups. The first, her personal files, mainly includes family and personal correspondence, biographical materials, genealogical charts and histories and other papers concerning her children. The second group, her professional files, includes Mrs. Freeman’s prose, poetry, plays and radio scripts as well as correspondence with publishers, editors and Archibald Rutledge, her friend and critic. The subject files consist of reference materials that Mrs. Freeman used for story ideas. There is much information relevant to York County history, including the York County Nature Museum, Glencairn Garden and the Catawba Indians. Related material will include the official college records, since Mrs. Freeman was involved with Dr. Kathryn Powell’s Title I Education project for quality preschool education and since Mrs. Freeman is a former employee of Winthrop.

Henry Radcliffe Sims was a lawyer, South Carolina state legislator, editor, and the fourth president of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women and served from 1944-1959. For more information please consult the Henry Radcliffe Sims Biography above.

The Henry Radcliffe Sims Papers consist primarily of personal and business correspondence and offers a good source of information on the Sims family's varied interests in South Carolina, especially their businesses in Orangeburg, South Carolina. The correspondence generally deals with Henry Sims' brief military career; his presidency at Winthrop; his efforts along with his brothers' help to establish a radio station at Orangeburg; his constant concern in the Sims Publishing Company; his interest in the political and educational welfare of his nephews; his devotion to his family; and his association with various South Carolina legislators. Areas of research would perhaps include, among others, biographical information on Sims and his family; their contributions to South Carolina, especially in the area of publications (ex. James Strom Thurmond [1902-2003] was the Governor of South Carolina from 1947 to 1951 and a United States Senator from South Carolina for 48 years from 1954 to 2003. He was a member of the Winthrop Board of Trustees in 1937-1938.

Jean Crouch Thurmond [1926-1960] was a 1947 Winthrop graduate and was Strom Thurmond's first wife.

The Strom and Jean Crouch Thurmond Scrapbook collection consists of three scrapbooks containing photocopies of clippings relating to Mr. and Mrs. Thurmond’s family life, as well as the political career of Strom Thurmond. Senator Thurmond’s first wife, Jean Crouch Thurmond was a 1947 graduate of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women.

Thomas Smithwick Gettys [1912-2003] was a lawyer and U.S. Representative for the Fifth Congressional District of South Carolina from 1964 to 1974. He was born in Rock Hill, SC and received an A.B. degree from Erskine College in 1933. He was a former Postmaster in Rock Hill and practiced law in the Gettys, McFadden and Wilkerson Law Firm.

Thomas Smithwick Gettys [1912-2003] was a lawyer and U.S. Representative for the Fifth Congressional District of South Carolina. The Thomas Smithwick Gettys Papers consist of reports, resolutions, correspondence, news releases, government publications, and newspaper clippings, relating to Getty’s efforts to enlarge and develop the Cowpens Battlefield Site of Cherokee County, South Carolina. Accession 65 - Sara Vandiver Liverance Papers
Sara Vandiver Liverance [1914-1996] was a club woman, journalist for the Greenville News, and chief of its Anderson Bureau 1949-1976. Mrs. Liverance played an instrumental role and was the driving force in persuading the South Carolina General Assembly to allow jury service for women as well as the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1967, officially giving South Carolina women the right to vote.

The Sara Vandiver Liverance Papers include correspondence, memoranda, minutes, program notes, newspaper clippings, legislative bills and publications, concerning Mrs. Liverance’s efforts as legislative chairwoman to the S.C. Council for the Common Good, to get jury service for women in S.C., and in trying to improve nursing care in the state. While the collection extends from 1954 to 1981, most of the material is for the period from 1966 to 1973.

Accession 155 - Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers
Juanita Willmon Goggins (1934-2010) was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, House District number 49, representing York County for six years. Born in Pendleton, SC in 1934 she would also become the first African-American woman to serve on the United States Civil Rights Commission as well as the first African-American woman to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Goggins was responsible for creating sickle cell anemia testing in all of the county health departments in South Carolina among other accomplishments. Ms. Goggins passed away in 2010.

Accession 172 M77 (95) - South Carolina Democratic Party Constitution
The Democratic Party of South Carolina can trace its origins to the 18th century. However, the version of the party that exists today is considered to have formed after the elections of 1876, which brought an end to the Republican government during Reconstruction in the state and shifted power to the Democrats. The party maintained nearly total political control in South Carolina through World War II. In the decades that followed, conservative-leaning citizens in the state began to transfer their support to the Republican Party, which was better organized and increasingly energetic at the time. The Democrats ultimately lost political power in the state during the second half of the 20th century.

He is also credited with being one of the driving influences in the founding of Rock Hill, SC's Come-See-Me Festival.

The Rock Hill Board of Realtors was founded in 1955 to promote and maintain high standards of conduct in the real estate business and to unite those engaged in the recognized branches of the real estate business in York County for the purpose of exerting a beneficial influence upon the real estate business and related interests. In 1976 the Rock Hill Board of Realtors became the York County Board of Realtors and, in 1977, the organization was incorporated.

Dr. Charles B. Notess (1928-2008) was a professor of Sociology at Winthrop College from 1975 to 1981.

Accession 31 - Episcopal Church Home for Children Records
The Episcopal Church Home was established in 1850 in Charleston, S.C. for orphan girls and was chartered by the S.C. General Assembly in 1852.

This collection is a valuable source on the Church’s historical effort to extend its services for the social improvement of South Carolina (in this case the Episcopal Diocese’s program for destitute children.) While there is information on the Episcopal Home for Children from its beginning in 1850 to 1967, the actual records do not start until 1866. A centennial history of the Episcopal Home will serve as an aid and general guideline to the researcher. (See box 1, folder 1). The collection consists of minutes, reports of the annual meeting, general correspondence, superintendent’s records, health records, attendance registers, financial records, newsletters (both bound and unbound), and photographs. Accession 85 M36 (58) - Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church Programs
The Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church is located near Lancaster, SC in Lancaster County and is one of the oldest churches in the Piedmont section of South Carolina. The church can trace it's roots to the 1750s with the first known sermon preached by Rev. John Brown in February 1753. The first "meeting house" was burned during the American Revolution and the subsequent church burned in 1802. The current church was the fourth structure and was built in 1896 with a brick veneer added in the 1940s. The church cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Rock Hill Oratory is affiliated with the Catholic Church and was founded in 1934 as part of a worldwide federation of 60 independent houses. The Oratory was early supporter of Civil Rights and the local sit-ins in Rock Hill, SC during the 1960s. The Oratory was also affiliated with the St. Anne Catholic School which became the first racially integrated school in South Carolina.

The object of the organization is "to offer the women of the Diocese a program of worship, study, service, gifts, and fellowship which will deepen and strengthen their own spiritual lives and lead them into service for the church in the parish, community, diocese, nation and world."

He worked in banks in various capacities beginning as a messenger at the Savings Bank of Rock Hill at the age of 8 rising to the Presidency of the People's National Bank and the Board Chairman of the People's National Bank and Trust Company. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Winthrop College from 1938 to 1953. He died in 1953 at the age of 70.

The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was created to promote Rock Hill, SC in an effort to attract new residents and businesses to the area with the intention of “making it a better community.” The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce was an organization formed by local businessman that can trace its history to 1888 when Captain W. L. Roddey founded the Rock Hill Board of Trade. By 1901 they began to refer to themselves as the Commercial Club and continued to be known as the Commercial Club until it was reorganized as the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce in 1906 under the direction of John Gary Anderson.

The Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce Records consist of correspondence, lists, brochures, pamphlets, program notes, magazine issues, newsletters, committee reports, financial data, and other records relating to the history and activities of the Chamber of Commerce. The collection contains records regarding sponsorship of Rock Hill’s “Come-See-Me” event and records of former Chamber Managers’ Vernon Grant and Clint Carpenter. Also contained are papers regarding Chamber accreditation, co-educational support for Winthrop University, area-wide racial integration, and recognition of Rock Hill as an All-America City.

The Rock Hill Music Club was founded March 20, 1914, by Mrs. A. E. Smith and a group of ladies. The Club has provided music awards and scholarships and free community concerts since.

The Rock Hill Music Club Records consist of minutes, correspondence, yearbooks, historical sketches, programs of the meetings, minute books, newspaper clippings, membership records, and two scrapbooks relating to the activities and history of the club. The club was organized in 1914. The records date from 1941 to 1977.

The Rock Hill Oratory is affiliated with the Catholic Church and was founded in 1934 as part of a worldwide federation of 60 independent houses. The Oratory was early supporter of Civil Rights and the local sit-ins in Rock Hill, SC during the 1960s. The Oratory was also affiliated with the St. Anne Catholic School which became the first racially integrated school in South Carolina.

Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas (1879-1962) was a professor of Chemistry and Physics at Winthrop from 1914 through 1926. He brought his family with him to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop and quickly became one of the prominent families in Rock Hill, SC. The Thomas Family founded Thomas Tours, Inc. which was a Rock Hill travel agency founded in the 1920s and existed until 2010 when it was merged with Mann Travels.

Accession 155 - Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers
Juanita Willmon Goggins (1934-2010) was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, House District number 49, representing York County for six years. Born in Pendleton, SC in 1934 she would also become the first African-American woman to serve on the United States Civil Rights Commission as well as the first African-American woman to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Goggins was responsible for creating sickle cell anemia testing in all of the county health departments in South Carolina among other accomplishments. Ms. Goggins passed away in 2010.

John Gary Anderson (1861-1937) founded the Rock Hill Buggy Company and was the president of the Anderson Motor Company in Rock Hill, SC. He was also one of the key figures in the early development of Rock Hill. He helped in the founding of the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce serving as it's first president, is credited with creating the Rock Hill Telephone Company and helping come up with the "Rock Hill Plan" for the reduction of the production of cotton. Mr. Anderson was a member of the Winthrop Board of Trustees from 1920 to 1937.

The York County Multiethnic Heritage Project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the City of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July, 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and American Indian.

Accession 242 M102 (131) - Rock Hill Fire Department Records
This collection consists of letters from William Harrison “Harry” Wylie (1857-1920) while he was employed by the Catawba Power Company (later became Duke Energy). Beginning in 1901, Harry was in charge of building the dam at India Hook Shoals on the Catawba River that created Lake Wylie. Harry was the brother of Dr. Walker Gill Wylie (1848-1923) for which Lake Wylie is named. Both of the letters written on Catawba Power Company letterhead concern Harry’s involvement with the Rock Hill Fire Department. One letter dated November 19, 1903 is to Mr. William Joseph Roddey (1861-1945) and the other dated February 18, 1905 is addressed to the Rock Hill Fire Department. Also included in this collection is a program book for the 33rd Annual Convention of South Carolina State Firemen’s Association held in Rock Hill in 1928. The program book lists officers of the Association, committee appointments, fire chiefs in SC, Rock Hill city officials with brief biographical sketches and sketches of the history of SC State Firemen’s Association, the city of Rock Hill and of Winthrop College.

Vernon Simeon Plemion Grant (1902-1990) was an American illustrator known for his whimsical gnome characters and fairy tale drawings. He created advertising illustrations for several large companies and major magazines, but is best known for the Snap!™, Crackle!™ and Pop!™ characters for Kellogg’s Rice Krispies® cereal. Mr. Grant married Elizabeth Fewell who was a native Rock Hillian and they eventually moved to Rock Hill, SC. Mr. Grant served several years on the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce and helped to found the award-winning Come-See-Me Festival in Rock Hill, SC.

Accession 259 - Arnold Shankman Papers
Dr. Arnold Shankman (1945-1983) was a highly regarded historian whose scholarship included the American Civil War, the Old South, ethnic and immigrant history, southern Jewish history, civil rights, and women’s history. Dr. Shankman received his B.A. from Knox College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned Civil War historian Bell Wiley. Shankman also studied for a year at Harvard with Oscar Handlin, the patriarch of American immigrant history. As a Professor of History at Winthrop University from 1975 to 1983, Dr. Shankman embarked upon his own impressive career, which included the publication of four books, more than 50 articles, and numerous speeches and public service activities. Beloved by students and colleagues, Dr. Shankman’s career was cut short by his untimely death from cancer at the age of 37.

Clarence Holland "Icky" Albright (1906-2000) served on Rock Hill (SC) City Council from 1940-1944, as Mayor of Rock Hill from 1948-1954, and as South Carolina State Senator from 1966-1968. Icky Albright was a realtor, insurance executive, and the regional director of the Small Business Administration. He is also credited with being one of the driving influences in the founding of Rock Hill, SC's Come-See-Me Festival.

William Gist Finley (1895-1969) was a York, SC native and graduated from Georgetown University School of Law in 1921. He was a York County Attorney from 1927 to 1930 and served as an attorney and Solicitor of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (1930-1950). He was also Vice President of the South Carolina Bar Association (1936-1953) and President of the York County Bar Association (1949-1950).

Mary Elizabeth Frayser was an educator, home economist, social worker and club woman. She was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1868. She received her B.S. degree from Columbia University in 1911. After serving as Head of the Home Economics Department at Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia 1911-1912, she became the State Agent for Rural and Mill Village Community Extension Work at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1912. Frayser subsequently held positions with Georgia Federal Children's Bureau, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Virginia Tuberculosis Association, She returned to Winthrop in 1922 resuming her mill village work as well as teaching Sociology. In 1926 Frayser began research projects in Home Economics through a co-operative program between Winthrop and Clemson, a position she held for the next 20 years. Miss Frayser was a member of and participated in numerous organizations concerning social issues in South Carolina. She died just short of her 100th birthday in 1968.

The Springs Cotton Mill traces it's beginning to the organization of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Co. which opened a plant in Fort Mill, SC in 1888. The company went on to open plants in Lancaster, SC and Chester, SC. At one time Springs was the largest industrial employer in South Carolina. Springs began an association with a Brazil based company (Coteminas) in 2001 and merged with Coteminas in 2005 forming Springs Global. By 2007, Springs had ended all manufacturing in South Carolina.

The Springs Cotton Mill History collection consists of a history of the Springs Cotton Mill based in Fort Mill, SC including a narrative and description of the company’s first 75 years of history from 1888 to 1963, which includes photographs and illustrations. Also included is a copy of the annual message to stockholders (a report of the 1962 calendar year) titled "Freedom to Fight with Both Hands" by H. W. Close, president.

Accession 4 - Frances Lander Spain Papers
Dr. Frances Lander Spain [1903-1999] was a 1925 graduate of Winthrop with a Bachelor of Arts and later received a B. L. S. from Emory University (1936) and M. A. and Ph. D degrees from the University of Chicago (1940, 1944). Dr. Spain would later serve as the Director of Library and Professor of library science at Winthrop (1936-1949).

The Frances Lander Spain Papers consist of correspondence, clippings, photographs, memorabilia, and copies of her publications relating to her involvement with professional library organizations such as the American Library Association; her library work in Thailand as a Fulbright and Rockefeller Foundation grantee (1951-1952 and 1964-1965); and her work as coordinator of children’s services at the N.Y. Public Library (1953-1961). Correspondents include librarian Louis Round Wilson. There is also a family history which includes the family names Chambers, Collier, Cook, Crossland, Dantzler, Gran, Hardeman, Lander, McDaniel, McPherson, Miller, Pearce, Pierce, Schenk, Snead, Spain, Sparks, Warlick and Zimmerman.

Accession 6 - Juanita H. Neely Papers
Juanita Henderson Neely was an extension agent and educator. She was born in Rock Hill, S.C. in 1889. She graduated with a B.A. from Winthrop College in 1911 and taught school from 1911 to 1918. She began working for the SC Extension Service, then based at Winthrop, in 1918 serving Lancaster County. She held various positions in the SC Extension Service in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. She became the State Home Demonstration Agent in 1947, a position she held until 1957. She was a member and president of the SC Home Economics Association, the York County Historical Society, the Catawba Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the S.D. Barron Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). Neely died in 1984.

James Pinckney Kinard (1864-1951) was the second president of Winthrop College (now University), the South Carolina College for Women and served from 1929-1934. For more information please consult the James Pinckney Kinard Biography above.

The James Pinckney Kinard Papers consist of family history charts of the Kinard family and related Kuhn and Summer families, and a Kinard family history, personal correspondence including letters to and from his wife Lee Wicker Kinard (1873-1963), their daughter Nelle Kinard, and other family members, business correspondence, financial papers, literary manuscripts, scrapbooks, and photographs pertaining to Kinard’s student days at the Citadel, his personal and family affairs, his teaching career, his presidency of Winthrop, and his efforts to get his literary manuscripts published. This collection consists primarily of correspondence and offers an informative insight into the personal lives and family affairs of Dr. Kinard and his wife, Mrs. Lee Wicker Kinard. The correspondence generally deals with Dr. Kinard’s struggle against the South Carolina legislature’s cuts in educational appropriations for Winthrop during the Depression; and his varied activities on behalf of Winthrop as President Emeritus. The collection also includes several unpublished manuscripts ranging from his student days at the Citadel to his later life. Areas of research would perhaps include, among others, biographical information on Dr. Kinard and social history during the Depression.

Henry Radcliffe Sims was a lawyer, South Carolina state legislator, editor, and the fourth president of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women and served from 1944-1959. For more information please consult the Henry Radcliffe Sims Biography above.

The Henry Radcliffe Sims Papers consist primarily of personal and business correspondence and offers a good source of information on the Sims family's varied interests in South Carolina, especially their businesses in Orangeburg, South Carolina. The correspondence generally deals with Henry Sims' brief military career; his presidency at Winthrop; his efforts along with his brothers' help to establish a radio station at Orangeburg; his constant concern in the Sims Publishing Company; his interest in the political and educational welfare of his nephews; his devotion to his family; and his association with various South Carolina legislators. Areas of research would perhaps include, among others, biographical information on Sims and his family; their contributions to South Carolina, especially in the area of publications (ex. Times and Democrat’s historical development). There is also material relating to Sims’ nephew, Hugo Sims Jr., and the latter’s 1946 campaign for a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Christine South Gee (1884-1978) was a graduate of Winthrop Normal and Industrial College of South Carolina in 1903, taught English at Winthrop from 1909-1913, and was a Winthrop Trustee from 1944-1962. She was also a home economist, educator, and club woman. Mrs. Gee was the first recipient of an Honorary Degree from Winthrop in 1966.

The Christine South Gee Papers include family histories; biographical data; annual reports of home demonstration work in South Carolina (1920-1922) compiled by Mrs. Gee; speeches; magazine articles (1935-1963); newspaper clippings (1934-1968); photographs (1903-1954) and certificates of awards. The collection primarily pertains to Mrs. Gee’s work as South Carolina State Home Demonstration Agent (1918-1923); her role in the formation of the South Carolina Extension Homemakers’ Council (1921), formerly the South Carolina Council of Farm Women; her activities as president of the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1943-1945); her study of development in programs for adult education and rural women; and her historical interest in South Carolina statesmen and political leaders. Mrs. Harriet P. Lynch and Mrs. Eulalie Salley served as president and vice-president respectively of the Equal Suffrage League. Mrs. Lynch was Honorary President from Cheraw, SC and Mrs. Salley was President from Aiken, SC.

The Harriet P. Lynch Letters consist of correspondence from Harriet P. Lynch to Mrs. Julian B. Salley discussing the equal pay for equal work controversy at Winthrop College (1915-1920) where certain women teachers resigned or were fired. Mrs. Salley and Mrs. Lynch served as president and vice-president respectively of the Equal Suffrage League.

ames Strom Thurmond [1902-2003] was the Governor of South Carolina from 1947 to 1951 and a United States Senator from South Carolina for 48 years from 1954 to 2003. He was a member of the Winthrop Board of Trustees in 1937-1938.

Jean Crouch Thurmond [1926-1960] was a 1947 Winthrop graduate and was Strom Thurmond's first wife.

The Strom and Jean Crouch Thurmond Scrapbook collection consists of three scrapbooks containing photocopies of clippings relating to Mr. and Mrs. Thurmond’s family life, as well as the political career of Strom Thurmond. Senator Thurmond’s first wife, Jean Crouch Thurmond was a 1947 graduate of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women.

Dr. Alvin Laroy Duckett [1908-1967] was born in Greenwood, SC. A graduate of The Citadel at Charleston, SC in 1930, he received his M.A. (1939) and Ph.D. (1957) degrees from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Kathryn Summers Powell (1920-2000) was born in High Springs, FL and married Orrin Bert Powell in 1939. In 1940 she received her B.S. from Florida State College for Women. She worked as a teacher in High Springs and Monticello, FL and later earned her M.S. (1954) and Ph.D. (1960) from Florida State University. Dr. Powell then became Professor of Home Economics at Winthrop College from 1960 through 1976. She passed away on December 11, 2000.

Dr. Elizabeth Friench Johnson [1890-1979] was a Professor and Head of the Modern Languages Department at Winthrop College 1922-1955. She was very involved in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) serving as the President of the South Carolina Division 1934-1936 and president of the Rock Hill branch 1952-1953. Dr. Johnson was involved in such organizations as the International Institute of Arts and Letters, the Diocese of the Upper South Carolina Episcopal Church, and the International Federation of University Women.

Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas (1879-1962) was a professor of Chemistry and Physics at Winthrop from 1914 through 1926. He brought his family with him to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop and quickly became one of the prominent families in Rock Hill, SC. The Thomas Family founded Thomas Tours, Inc. which was a Rock Hill travel agency founded in the 1920s and existed until 2010 when it was merged with Mann Travels.

Organized in 1904 as the Monday Afternoon Club and later the Monday Club, it became the Outlook Club in 1916. The club was federated by the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1907 and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1933.

The Esther Surasky Pinck Papers consist of correspondence and newspaper clippings, relating to the Pinck, Surasky, and Polier families, together with concert, literary, and drama programs, newsletters, photographs, citations, poems, and memorabilia. The papers contain information on Mrs. Pinck’s years at Winthrop and her extensive work for Jewish causes, such as the United Jewish Appeal, the Jewish National Fund, Technion, Hadassah, and the Hebrew Home for the Aged. There is also a biographical file on Mrs. Pinck’s husband, Dr. Louis A. Pinck, who was a chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Accession 186 - York County Multiethnic Heritage Project Collection
The York County Multiethnic Heritage Project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the City of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July, 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and American Indian.

Accession 1 - Mary Elizabeth Frayser Papers
Mary Elizabeth Frayser was an educator, home economist, social worker and club woman. She was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1868. She received her B.S. degree from Columbia University in 1911. After serving as Head of the Home Economics Department at Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia 1911-1912, she became the State Agent for Rural and Mill Village Community Extension Work at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1912. Frayser subsequently held positions with Georgia Federal Children's Bureau, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Virginia Tuberculosis Association, She returned to Winthrop in 1922 resuming her mill village work as well as teaching Sociology. In 1926 Frayser began research projects in Home Economics through a co-operative program between Winthrop and Clemson, a position she held for the next 20 years. Miss Frayser was a member of and participated in numerous organizations concerning social issues in South Carolina. She died just short of her 100th birthday in 1968.

Dr. Frances Lander Spain [1903-1999] was a 1925 graduate of Winthrop with a Bachelor of Arts and later received a B. L. S. from Emory University (1936) and M. A. and Ph. D degrees from the University of Chicago (1940, 1944). Dr. Spain would later serve as the Director of Library and Professor of library science at Winthrop (1936-1949).

The Frances Lander Spain Papers consist of correspondence, clippings, photographs, memorabilia, and copies of her publications relating to her involvement with professional library organizations such as the American Library Association; her library work in Thailand as a Fulbright and Rockefeller Foundation grantee (1951-1952 and 1964-1965); and her work as coordinator of children’s services at the N.Y. Public Library (1953-1961). Correspondents include librarian Louis Round Wilson. There is also a family history which includes the family names Chambers, Collier, Cook, Crossland, Dantzler, Gran, Hardeman, Lander, McDaniel, McPherson, Miller, Pearce, Pierce, Schenk, Snead, Spain, Sparks, Warlick and Zimmerman.

Jessie Huey Laurence (1886-1971) was a club woman, civic leader, native of Union County, SC, and a 1907 Winthrop graduate. She was active in the South Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, the Winthrop Alumnae Association, Council for the Common Good, and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

The Jessie Huey Laurence Papers primarily consist of correspondence, but also included are speeches, program notes, minutes, financial records, photographs, clippings, and scrapbooks relating to her role in the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs (1928-1937); her promotion of a compulsory school attendance bill for South Carolina (1934-1936); the formation of the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1935); Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Public Works Administration (PWA) projects in South Carolina; and her interest in the Catawba Indians of York County, as chairman of Indian Affairs Committee for the Catawba Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a past president of the South Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, the South Carolina Status of Women Conference, and of the Lexington County Hospital Auxiliary and was on the Board of Directors for the Women's State Committee, Committee on Children and Youth, Richland-Lexington Tuberculosis Association, South Carolina Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc. and the South Carolina State Library Board. Mrs. Busbee was also on the Board of Trustees for the Palmetto Outdoor Historical Drama Association and Advisory Board for the South Carolina Mental Health Association.

Accession 65 - Sara Vandiver Liverance Papers
Sara Vandiver Liverance [1914-1996] was a club woman, journalist for the Greenville News, and chief of its Anderson Bureau 1949-1976. Mrs. Liverance played an instrumental role and was the driving force in persuading the South Carolina General Assembly to allow jury service for women as well as the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1967, officially giving South Carolina women the right to vote.

The Sara Vandiver Liverance Papers include correspondence, memoranda, minutes, program notes, newspaper clippings, legislative bills and publications, concerning Mrs. Liverance’s efforts as legislative chairwoman to the S.C. Council for the Common Good, to get jury service for women in S.C., and in trying to improve nursing care in the state. While the collection extends from 1954 to 1981, most of the material is for the period from 1966 to 1973.

Accession 155 - Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers
Juanita Willmon Goggins (1934-2010) was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, House District number 49, representing York County for six years. Born in Pendleton, SC in 1934 she would also become the first African-American woman to serve on the United States Civil Rights Commission as well as the first African-American woman to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Goggins was responsible for creating sickle cell anemia testing in all of the county health departments in South Carolina among other accomplishments. Ms. Goggins passed away in 2010.

Accession 112 - Amelia Pride Book Club of Rock Hill Records
The Amelia Pride Book Club of Rock Hill, founded in 1896, is Rock Hill’s oldest book club and “was formed for the main purpose of exchanging books of a high type of biography, history, literature and fiction” since there was no library in 1896. The club was named in honor of “Mrs. Amelia Pride, a citizen of Rock Hill who was very intellectual and influenced the young people for cultural living and enjoyment.” Later the club became a social, literary, cultural and philanthropic club.

Organized in 1904 as the Monday Afternoon Club and later the Monday Club, it became the Outlook Club in 1916. The original purpose of the book club (later the interests of the club were literary, social, and philanthropic) was to affect a better relationship between the wives of the Winthrop College faculty, and the women of Rock Hill. The club was federated by the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1907 and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1933.

Martha Thomas Fitzgerald (1895-1981) was a Winthrop graduate in 1916 and a prominent South Carolina educator and politician. Mrs. Fitzgerald was the first woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in a general election.

The South Carolina Extension Homemakers Council was organized to promote the study of Home Economics and the work of home economics in the state. The council was originally known as the South Carolina Council of Farm Women which was organized at Winthrop in June, 1921. The name was changed to South Carolina Home Demonstration Council in 1957 and to South Carolina Extension Homemakers Council in 1966. The name was changed again in 1992 when it became the South Carolina Association for Family and Community Education was adopted in 1992, and finally became the South Carolina Family and Community Leaders in 1995.

Accession 1 - Mary Elizabeth Frayser Papers
Mary Elizabeth Frayser was an educator, home economist, social worker and club woman. She was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1868. She received her B.S. degree from Columbia University in 1911. After serving as Head of the Home Economics Department at Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia 1911-1912, she became the State Agent for Rural and Mill Village Community Extension Work at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1912. Frayser subsequently held positions with Georgia Federal Children's Bureau, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Virginia Tuberculosis Association, She returned to Winthrop in 1922 resuming her mill village work as well as teaching Sociology. In 1926 Frayser began research projects in Home Economics through a co-operative program between Winthrop and Clemson, a position she held for the next 20 years. Miss Frayser was a member of and participated in numerous organizations concerning social issues in South Carolina. She died just short of her 100th birthday in 1968.

Mrs. Harriet P. Lynch and Mrs. Eulalie Salley served as president and vice-president respectively of the Equal Suffrage League. Mrs. Lynch was Honorary President from Cheraw, SC and Mrs. Salley was President from Aiken, SC.

The Harriet P. Lynch Letters consist of correspondence from Harriet P. Lynch to Mrs. Julian B. Salley discussing the equal pay for equal work controversy at Winthrop College (1915-1920) where certain women teachers resigned or were fired. Mrs. Salley and Mrs. Lynch served as president and vice-president respectively of the Equal Suffrage League.

Accession 65 - Sara Vandiver Liverance Papers
Sara Vandiver Liverance [1914-1996] was a club woman, journalist for the Greenville News, and chief of its Anderson Bureau 1949-1976. Mrs. Liverance played an instrumental role and was the driving force in persuading the South Carolina General Assembly to allow jury service for women as well as the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1967, officially giving South Carolina women the right to vote.

The Sara Vandiver Liverance Papers include correspondence, memoranda, minutes, program notes, newspaper clippings, legislative bills and publications, concerning Mrs. Liverance’s efforts as legislative chairwoman to the S.C. Council for the Common Good, to get jury service for women in S.C., and in trying to improve nursing care in the state. While the collection extends from 1954 to 1981, most of the material is for the period from 1966 to 1973.

The South Carolina Clergy Consultation Service For Problem Pregnancy was organized in 1970 by Jack Crandall and Alan Elmore as "a statewide organization of ministers who feel that it is our moral, pastoral, and religious obligation to provide compassion and help to women who are confronted with problem pregnancies." The organization was affiliated with the National Clergy Consultation Service founded by Rev. Howard Moody and Arlene Carmen.

The South Carolina Clergy Consultation Service For Problem Pregnancy Records consist of correspondence, financial records, case study questionnaires and reference materials, documenting the efforts of the Pro-Choice organization (SCCCS) to provide counseling service for women seeking abortions. The SCCCS opened its services in 1970. Correspondents include Rev. Howard Moody, National Clergy Consultation Service Coordinator; South Carolina Senators Ernest F. Hollings, and Strom Thurmond; and South Carolina Congressman James R. Mann.

The Abortion Interest Movement of South Carolina was organized in March, 1969 and developed as an extension of the People for Abortion Reform/Repeal. Its purpose is “to educate the citizens of South Carolina about the need for modern abortion legislation.”

The Abortion Interest Movement of South Carolina Records consist of correspondence, speeches, brochures, pamphlets, studies, newspaper clippings, and other records concerning abortion reform not only in South Carolina but in other states. The collection offers a good source of information on the movement to repeal abortion laws not only in South Carolina but also in other parts of the United States and in Europe. The Abortion Interest Movement (AIM) was organized in March, 1969 and developed as an extension of the People for Abortion Reform/Repeal. Its purpose is “to educate the citizens of South Carolina about the need for modern abortion legislation.”

Accession 168 - Equal Rights Amendment South Carolina Coalition Records
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women. It was first introduced to Congress in 1923. Re-introduced in 1971, the amendment was passed by both houses of Congress in 1972 and passed to the states for ratification. After attempts to get the amendment ratified for 10 years, only 31 of the necessary 38 states ratified it and therefore it failed.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) records, dating from 1970 to 1978, include correspondence, legislative journals, magazine articles, newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets, and other records relating to the work of the South Carolina Coalition in trying to get the ERA ratified by the South Carolina state legislature. There is relevant material concerning the ERA issue in other states. The Coalition was organized in 1972. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women.

Ellen Evans Cathcart (1869-1952) was born in Columbia, SC and was the first woman member of the Democratic National Committee who was also instrumental in the founding of the Children’s Bureau. She was also a charter member of the Equal suffrage League of South Carolina. She also served in numerous volunteer and advocacy organizations in the state.

Accession 259 - Arnold Shankman Papers
Dr. Arnold Shankman (1945-1983) was a highly regarded historian whose scholarship included the American Civil War, the Old South, ethnic and immigrant history, southern Jewish history, civil rights, and women’s history. Dr. Shankman received his B.A. from Knox College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned Civil War historian Bell Wiley. Shankman also studied for a year at Harvard with Oscar Handlin, the patriarch of American immigrant history. As a Professor of History at Winthrop University from 1975 to 1983, Dr. Shankman embarked upon his own impressive career, which included the publication of four books, more than 50 articles, and numerous speeches and public service activities. Beloved by students and colleagues, Dr. Shankman’s career was cut short by his untimely death from cancer at the age of 37.

Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas (1879-1962) was a professor of Chemistry and Physics at Winthrop from 1914 through 1926. He brought his family with him to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop and quickly became one of the prominent families in Rock Hill, SC. The Thomas Family founded Thomas Tours, Inc. which was a Rock Hill travel agency founded in the 1920s and existed until 2010 when it was merged with Mann Travels.

James Pinckney Kinard (1864-1951) was the second president of Winthrop College (now University), the South Carolina College for Women and served from 1929-1934. The James Pinckney Kinard Papers consist of family history charts of the Kinard family and related Kuhn and Summer families, and a Kinard family history, personal correspondence including letters to and from his wife Lee Wicker Kinard (1873-1963), their daughter Nelle Kinard, and other family members, business correspondence, financial papers, literary manuscripts, scrapbooks, and photographs pertaining to Kinard’s student days at the Citadel, his personal and family affairs, his teaching career, his presidency of Winthrop, and his efforts to get his literary manuscripts published. This collection consists primarily of correspondence and offers an informative insight into the personal lives and family affairs of Dr. Kinard and his wife, Mrs. Lee Wicker Kinard. The correspondence generally deals with Dr. Kinard’s struggle against the South Carolina legislature’s cuts in educational appropriations for Winthrop during the Depression; and his varied activities on behalf of Winthrop as President Emeritus. The collection also includes several unpublished manuscripts ranging from his student days at the Citadel to his later life. Areas of research would perhaps include, among others, biographical information on Dr. Kinard and social history during the Depression.

Grace Beacham Freeman (1916-2002) was a writer, poet, and educator and was the South Carolina Poet Laureate from 1985 to 1986. She was married to Winthrop Biology professor John Alderman Freeman.

The Grace Beacham Freeman Papers documents the development of Mrs. Freeman’s career as a writer from 1948 to the 1960s as well as her relationship with various members of her family. The collection is divided into two groups. The first, her personal files, mainly includes family and personal correspondence, biographical materials, genealogical charts and histories and other papers concerning her children. The second group, her professional files, includes Mrs. Freeman’s prose, poetry, plays and radio scripts as well as correspondence with publishers, editors and Archibald Rutledge, her friend and critic. The subject files consist of reference materials that Mrs. Freeman used for story ideas. There is much information relevant to York County history, including the York County Nature Museum, Glencairn Garden and the Catawba Indians. Related material will include the official college records, since Mrs. Freeman was involved with Dr. Kathryn Powell’s Title I Education project for quality preschool education and since Mrs. Freeman is a former employee of Winthrop.

William Gist Finley (1895-1969) was a York, SC native and graduated from Georgetown University School of Law in 1921. He was a York County Attorney from 1927 to 1930 and served as an attorney and Solicitor of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (1930-1950). He was also Vice President of the South Carolina Bar Association (1936-1953) and President of the York County Bar Association (1949-1950).

Accession 155 - Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers
Juanita Willmon Goggins (1934-2010) was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, House District number 49, representing York County for six years. Born in Pendleton, SC in 1934 she would also become the first African-American woman to serve on the United States Civil Rights Commission as well as the first African-American woman to serve as a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Goggins was responsible for creating sickle cell anemia testing in all of the county health departments in South Carolina among other accomplishments. Ms. Goggins passed away in 2010.

He was also Vice President of the South Carolina Bar Association (1936-1953) and President of the York County Bar Association (1949-1950).

Daniel Saye Hollis (1885-1981) was a politician and community leader from Rock Hill, SC. He was born in Lewisville, SC and was the supervisor of Lewsiville Township in 1907. He also helped found the York County Farm Bureau and served as it's first president. Mr. Hollis served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1950 to 1952.

Accession 186 - York County Multiethnic Heritage Project Collection
The York County Multiethnic Heritage Project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the City of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July, 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and American Indian.

The Rock Hill Board of Realtors was founded in 1955 to promote and maintain high standards of conduct in the real estate business and to unite those engaged in the recognized branches of the real estate business in York County for the purpose of exerting a beneficial influence upon the real estate business and related interests. In 1976 the Rock Hill Board of Realtors became the York County Board of Realtors and, in 1977, the organization was incorporated.
