Brief guide to basic library services

Library Users are welcome to browse the stacks and bring materials to the Information Commons desk on the main floor of the library for check out and return. Users may also take advantage of several other convenient requesting and pick up options for both Dacus materials and items from other libraries.

Who can visit the library?

  • Currently enrolled Winthrop students, currently employed Winthrop faculty or staff, Winthrop retirees, Friends of Dacus Library, and Alumni Card holders may visit the library during all open hours. You must have your current Winthrop ID with you in order to enter the building. Student and faculty staff IDs are issued by  Computing and Information Technology Services.
  • Community visitors are welcome to use the library Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM-5:00 PM. Please see our Access Policy Page for more information on library services available to the community.

How do I return books and laptops?

  • You may return library all library materials, including books, audio-visual materials, PASCAL and ILL in either our outdoor book drop, located by the exit doors of the library, or the indoor drop at the Information Commons Desk on the main floor. Please bring laptops to the Information Commons desk during posted library hours. You may also return materials (including laptops) by mail. Please pack books and laptops securely, and ship to:

Can students/faculty check out books? 

  • Yes, Winthrop University students and employees can check out books by placing requests through our library system, or can walk-in and check out books during the library's posted hours. Please note requests will be processed once per day; items will be held at the Information Commons desk for 7 days. An email notification will be sent when the materials are available for pick up. Materials can be picked up at the Information Commons desk during the Library’s operating hours. Please be sure to bring your ID card.   • Personal delivery of library materials is now available to Winthrop students, faculty and staff who live 15 or more miles from campus! For instructions, please see the Dacus Library Personal Delivery tab on this guide.

Can students check out textbooks?

  • Students may check out textbooks and course reserves to use in the library. The library has a small collection of textbooks, so students should check OneSearch or ask for help at the Information Commons, as not all required materials will be available.
  • We encourage professors to consider Open Educational Resources for their course materials, and encourage students to search Open Access platforms for textbooks.

Are PASCAL Delivers and InterLibrary Loan available?

  • PASCAL Delivers and Inter-Library Loan services are available to current students and staff, and both and retired Winthrop University faculty. For more information, see the PASCAL Delivers tab of this guide. ILL can be used for both books and article/electronic requests (this includes eBooks, although they are not guaranteed). Please note: PASCAL Delivers and ILL requests and delivery times are subject to the policies and protocols of the lending library – please plan accordingly.
