What is art research?

Artistic Research:
 

Artistic research can be described as making work by confronting another work or processes. This includes conducting research prior to any material manipulation. The work then becomes more than an object in an art gallery; it is comprised of a series of activities and processes that are alluded to in the physical work and are somehow revealed to the viewer. 
The role of the artistic researcher is to map out the developments and movements that occur during their process of knowing. The artist-as-researcher will often borrow from other disciplines as a way to investigate a topic using a range of methodologies.
