This guide provides answers to frequently asked questions about Dacus Library's operations during Winthrop University's COVID-19 Response.

Dacus Library will be closed for face-to-face interactions until further notice. Librarians ARE AVAILABLE through chat, email, and virtual appointments.

The FAQs (below) about how Library Services will be impacted are updated regularly. You can email refdesk@winthrop.edu with questions and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Winthrop students, faculty, and staff may still access the library's electronic resources (such as ebooks and databases) while we are closed but Librarians ARE AVAILABLE through chat, email, and virtual appointments. Click on the tabs at the top of the page for more information about remote access, library contact information, and campus contact information.

Library COVID-19 FAQs (updated March 23, 2020)

Is the Library going to be open while face-to-face classes have been canceled?

  • The Dacus Library building is closed until further notice. However, librarians will check the Reference Desk email account regularly. Starting Monday, March 23rd, 2020, Librarians will be on chat for virtual reference from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays; 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Fridays; 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays; and 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sundays. This will continue through the end of the semester.

What services will the library be offering during the remote instruction period?

  • Remote reference will be available through email and chat. Starting Monday, March 23rd, 2020, Librarians will be on chat from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays; 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Fridays; 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays; and 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sundays. For extensive reference services, librarians are offering virtual Book-a-Librarian appointments. These appointments are open to both students and faculty.

Can students still check out books? 

  • No, but students, faculty, and staff may access and use our eBooks while the library is closed. 

Can students still check out textbooks?

  • Since the building is closed, we cannot offer physical access to textbooks, however, there are other options. Please see the Textbooks tab for information about how you can access textbooks. 

Can students check out laptops?

  • No, as Dacus Library is closed until further notice. You may contact the Dean of the Library (Dr. Herring) about technology needs.

Is Interlibrary Loan and PASCAL Delivers still available?

  • The physical services for ILL and PASCAL have been suspended at this time. We ask that you hold any materials belonging to other institutions until campus reopens. Due dates will be extended. You may now submit copy/article requests through ILL. Contact Phillip Hays if you have questions concerning your ILL/PASCAL requests and loans.
