Voting Resources for 2020: Cast your Vote

Voting In-Person on Election Day:

  • Find your polling location at www.scvotes.org.

  • Voter ID: South Carolina accepts SC Driver's License, ID Card issued by the SC Department of Motor Vehicles, SC Voter Registration Card with a photo on it, Federal Military ID, US Passport, or State issued concealed weapons permit. A student ID is not permitted as your identification.

  • VoteRiders.org provides state specific information for all 50 states.
Voting absentee by mail or absentee in-person

What does voting absentee in-person mean? It means you can go to one of the below remote locations, with your state approved photo ID, and fill out a form requesting an absentee ballot on the spot. When you complete the form, the clerk will load your ballot into a voting machine, and you will be able to vote immediately. This is South Carolina’s version of “early voting.” We do not have early voting in our state, but we do have absentee in-person voting before the election.

What about if I already ordered an absentee ballot? If you ordered an absentee ballot, you should fill it out and mail it, or drop it off at one of the voting offices listed below. Please note that the legislature voted to pay for all return postage on absentee ballots in SC this year, so mailing it back will not cost you anything. Also important: If you ordered an absentee ballot, you will not be able to vote on election day. You need to return the absentee ballot. Absentee ballots will start being sent out next week.

Absentee by mail:

  • If you wish to vote absentee by mail, you must request an absentee ballot from your county election commission by mail in advance.
    Go here to begin: https://www.scvotes.gov/absentee-voting.
You can submit this form online or by mail, however, you do need to sign it.

  • You should order your absentee ballot at least two weeks before the election (by October 20th) to have time to return it.

  • Your absentee ballot must be returned to the election office in the county where you are registered by 7:00 pm on election day.

  • You do not need postage if you mail it back (it is pre-paid by the state). AND you can track it here!

Absentee in-person:

  • You may vote absentee in-person by going to the County Voter Registration Office where you are registered. You should do this in the business hours they are open, before the election.

  • To find the right office in South Carolina go to www.scvotes.org. Outside of South Carolina, you can start here: https://www.eac.gov/voters/register-and-vote-in-your-state.

  • You may vote absentee in-person up until 5:00 pm the day before the election (November 2nd) in South Carolina.
