Integration at Winthrop began during an important time in the history of the civil rights movement in the U.S. The years that followed brought greater numbers of students of color to the campus, and in many ways changed what had been the longstanding Winthrop experience. That diversification of academic and co-curricular life at Winthrop ultimately helped to pave the way for later efforts toward coeducation.

We invite you to share your stories of how you or a family member were involved or affected by the historic changes at the university during the 1960s and into the 1970s, as well as your personal experiences with how access to a Winthrop education has changed your family or your life. These comments will be archived as part of the 50th anniversary of integration and available in the future for researchers and others interested in the times. Some comments may be used on social media or this website. Thank you!
