American History: Periodicals

American Heritage is an illustrated quarterly magazine dedicated to covering the history of the United States of America for a general readership. While not a scholarly journal, the publication has played a key role in popularizing many aspects of American history.

This is the first professional journal of American history and is published by the American Historical Association. It treats all facets of history and is ranked as the premier journal of American historians. Successor to The Journal of Negro History, this is the leading periodical on African American history and life. This journal is full text in JSTOR, America: History & Life, and other databases.

The journal of the Organization of American Historians. It covers the field of American history and was established in 1914 as the Mississippi Valley Historical Review, the official journal of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association. After the publication of its fiftieth volume, the recognition of a shift in the direction of the membership and its scholarship led to the name change in 1964. Founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in January 1916, it became the leading scholarly publication on African American life and history. In 2001 it underwent a name change and became The Journal of African American History. This journal is full text in JSTOR and other databases.

The premier journal on the history of the Southern states, the Journal of Southern History is published four times a year, in February, May, August, and November, by the Southern Historical Association, Department of History, University of Georgia. The journal is available electronically via JSTOR, America: History and Life, and Academic Search Complete.
