Message from the Dean

The Dacus renovations have been studied over the past year and are now underway.  Renovations are planned over the following sixteen (16) weeks, and began in May.  Our front entrance is now closed and access is on the Eden Terrace side, at the back of the building.  We are about to begin the more intense part of the renovations, and that will include core drilling and other loud and bothersome noises.  We ask your forbearance and patience as we attempt to provide regular services during what promises to be a chaotic time.  In the end, however, we’ll have a much improved Dacus, complete with 24-hour access.  We’re pretty sure you’ll love the 24-hour access, but we’re also eager to show off the technobooths and the other accoutrements you’ll see in this completely remade first floor.

In the fall of 2010, we surveyed students, faculty and staff about what they wished to see changed in Dacus.  About 600 of you replied and here’s what you told us.  You wanted 24-hours access, group study and meeting rooms, individual study rooms, a student café and lounge, smarter technology and updated furniture and carpeting.  Our plans for the renovations include all of these but one: the student café.  Costs made this prohibitive for now, but we have carved out a place for it if funds allow us to revisit it in the future.  Meanwhile, we’re looking forward to giving you what you asked for.

If you’ve ever been involved in renovations, you know that whatever can go wrong usually does.  We hope that won’t be the case with these monumental changes to the main floor, but we know there will be times when things won’t go as planned.   Please let us know when they don’t go well for you as far as your studies and research are concerned, and we’ll see what we can do to make them better.

Special thanks go to our head of Public Services, Susan Silverman, and those who worked tirelessly on making plans, changing them, making them again, and changing them once more: Kaitlin Burdette, Pam Garrison, Andrew Johnston, and Gale Teaster.  Everyone on staff made significant contributions, but the lion’s share of work fell to these individuals.
